The SOS Project 2 - Jostedalsbreen
The second photo in the SOS series is from Jostedalsbreen. The biggest glacier in continental Europe is under threat. Plans are being made to build a gondola to the edge of the national park boundary which protects the glacier from development. Not only is this glacier massively threatened by climate change - now It would transport 75 000 people a year right up to the glacier's edge. one million visitors over a period of 13,5 years will make a massiv impact.
The National Park Board is clear:
This project would violate every conservation goal for Jostedalsbreen. It would degrade the landscape, displace wildlife, damage fragile vegetation, and turn the experience of wild nature into an illusion. What’s being sold – the silence, the wilderness, the authenticity – will vanish the moment the gondola arrives.

We’re building a campaign with two main goals:
-
To stop the gondola to Jostedalsbreen.
-
To push for political action to establish buffer zones around Norway’s national parks.
Norway has pledged to protect 30% of its land by 2030. But before expanding protections, we must ensure we can defend the already protected land. Right now, there are no buffer zones around our national parks. That means development is allowed right up to the boundary, pushing traffic, noise and infrastructure into fragile ecosystems. This needs to change.
What can you do?
Visit www.reddjostedalsbreen.no and fill out the contact form. We’ll send you an email when your voice matters most, like right now.
The deadline for public input is June 2. We need as many people as possible to show their opposition to the gondola plans. If politicians feel the pressure, they might change course.
The Norwegian Society for the Conservation of Nature (Naturvernforbundet) has also launched a petition against the gondola plans. Visit their website here to sign.
